Glossary Messages: An Overview

Glossary Messages are helpful messages and explanations that Transfer Specialists can configure to assist students and advisors with understanding the higher education terminology and coding conventions sometimes used in transfer articulation rules. This article provides an overview of the Glossary Messages page within Transferology® Lab and links to further documentation on creating and editing messages.

Overview

Glossary Messages help provide additional information to assist students and staff in understanding transfer evaluation rules within Transferology®. These messages appear in the student and staff applications but appear differently depending on where they are being viewed.

Transferology

When configured, these additional messages appear on the Match Details page as information icons in the student application. In the following example, the Glossary Message tells students that "PSY2XX" is an introductory 2xx-level subject elective. At the same time, "LESOCSI" signifies the course will meet the Social Sciences Liberal Education Core requirement.

Thus, in viewing these messages, the student is informed that PSYC 2145 Social Psychology would transfer as a PSY 2xx-level elective meeting the Social Sciences Liberal Education Core requirement at CollegeSource University (SH).

The same Glossary Messages will appear upon selecting Expand all notes:

Expanded note for transfer rule.

Transferology Lab

When configured, these additional messages appear on the Match Details page in the Lab when viewing Transfer Bundle matches. To view them, a staff member would select the information icon or Expand all notes, similar to the student application.

They also appear on the Transfer Equivalencies page:

Field Explanation
Message ID

A value contained within an Alternate Course, DPMask, IFlag, or Target Course within the institution's transfer rule.

Message IDs can also be created for Course Tags using the Message ID type of "Alternate Course."

Example: "1xx" is a value that signifies that a course transfers as a 1xx-level subject elective. It is contained within multiple equivalencies at CollegeSource University (SH). This institution supplies its equivalencies to Transferology through TES®.

Message Type

This field notes the type of element within the transfer articulation rule that the Message ID is found in.

Transfer Specialists can create Glossary Messages for the following elements within the institution's equivalencies:

Alternate Course

ACourses (or "alternate courses") are a type of alternate identity given to home/Target courses in uAchieve®. They provide an additional value that can be used when matching on a degree audit.

In transfer evaluation, ACourses can be used to indicate that a course can transfer as the Target course, or it can be used to fulfill other requirements (depending on the student's major, etc.). An example of this would be an Intro to Statistics course evaluated as transferring as STAT101 Intro to Statistics (Target course) but alternatively could fulfill the requirements of ECON105 Economics Statistics (ACourse1).

Transferology treats Course Tags attached to the home course within an equivalency in TES® as ACourses. Institutions typically use Course Tags to communicate that courses at the college or university meet core or general education requirements shared by a state or system. Where present, these tags help communicate to the institution evaluating the course that if that institution is also part of the same state or system, the transfer course should fulfill the same requirements at that school upon transfer.

DPMask

Applicable only to institutions supplying equivalencies from uAchieve®

DP Mask (Degree Program Mask) is a 15-character field that provides a second identifier to the Source ID to allow multiple sets of Transfer Articulation (TA) Tables for the same source institution. Each unique combination of Source ID + DP Mask can be set to contain articulation rules specific to a target program, discipline, or college.

IFlag

Applicable only to institutions supplying equivalencies from uAchieve®

IFlags are one-to-three character values within uAchieve that an institution chooses to represent course characteristics. Just like ACourses, IFlags can be used to match coursework on a degree audit. Additionally, they can prevent coursework from fulfilling a requirement.

Target Course

The course that the student receives transfer credit for.

  • Within uAchieve®, the course(s) that appear on the Target Course line.
  • Institutions supplying equivalencies from TES® would select this message type to create all Glossary Messages except those for Course Tags.

Where Target Course (contains) appears, this means Transferology is applying the Glossary Message to any Target Course that contains the Message ID.

Where Target Course (equals) appears, Transferology is applying the Glossary Message to any Target Course that exactly matches the Message ID.

Message Text Text to appear to students and staff as additional information when viewing an equivalency within the Transferology applications in the areas noted above.
