Replacement Courses: Search by Alternate Course or IFlag
Students may need to take coursework at an institution other than the one currently attending due to moving home for the summer or changing life circumstances. These students must find courses that would transfer to the home institution and fulfill degree requirements there. The Replacement Courses feature in the Transferology® Lab enables institutions to assist students in finding these classes. This article overviews how institutions can help students find courses that would transfer back to fulfill requirement areas such as liberal or general education goals - or even electives.

Replacement Courses: Search by Department details how staff can search for courses that will transfer back to the home institution as equivalent to a specific course offered by the school - for example, MATH140 College Algebra.
Suppose a student needs to find a course that would transfer back to the home institution as fulfilling the school's Logic and Quantitative Reasoning liberal education goal area. While MATH140 would be one such course, there are multiple courses that could fulfill this requirement, giving the student choices in what to take. Replacement Courses can be used to search for these courses by looking for transfer articulation rules that contain:
- Alternate Courses (uAchieve®).
- IFlags (uAchieve®).
- User Added Home Course (TES® or flat file import).
- Course Tag (TES).
For an explanation of Alternate Courses and IFlags, see Replacement Courses: Find Classes to Transfer Back to the Home Institution.
Search by Alternate Course or IFlag
To begin searching for a Replacement Course by one of these values:
- Go to the Advising & Recruiting menu.
- Select Replacement Courses.
The Replacement Courses page appears, with text fields for School Name and Department.
The School Name field auto-populates with the name of the user's institution. If looking for Replacement Courses for another school:
- Highlight the school name and press backspace to remove it from the search field.
- Enter and select the institution name.
- Select the Search by Alternate Course or IFlag instead hyperlink.
- Type the name of the Alternate Course, IFlag, User Added Home Course, or Course Tag into the Alternate Course/IFlag field.
- The responsive search field will begin to populate with the elements in the institution's transfer rules. Select the appropriate name.
Within the Alternate Course/IFlag search:
- Each Alternate Course, User Added Home Course, and Course Tag is labeled as an (alternate course).
- Each IFlag is labeled as an (iflg).
The Transferology® Lab will use a "reverse lookup" to search the equivalencies in the home institution's database. It will then provide a list of courses at other institutions that contain the element entered into the Alternate Course/IFlag field.
Note that while "MATH100R," "MATH101R," "MATH200R," etc. are listed within the Course field, they are not actual courses at CollegeSource University. These multi-part codes are used to classify non-equivalent transfer courses that meet the school's Logic & Quantitative Reasoning requirement.
MATH141 is an actual course number. Why does this course appear on the list? It's because the uAchieve® transfer rule that contains this course has "LOGICQR" in the Alternate Course field. Each institution's results will be tailored to the coding conventions used for Alternate Courses, IFlags, User Added Home Courses, and Course Tags.
Tip: It may be helpful to review the home institution's coding conventions with any staff members who will be using the Replacement Courses functionality in the Transferology® Lab to help ensure data will be interpreted correctly.
- Users are given two options:
- Select the Search button to the right of Any course with an Alternate Course of (name) - or Any course with an IFlag of (name) - to see a list of all transfer courses with rules containing the Alternate Course, IFlag, User Added Home Course, or Course Tag selected.
- Select the Search button to the right of a specific course code to see a list of courses that contain the same selected element and transfer back as the selected non-equivalent home "course."
